dgem leverages Goβs text/template engine to define declarative decision schemas (Policy-as-Template). Each .json.tmpl file pairs a Decision Schema ("schema", specifying the discrete questions, authorized labels, and sampling policy) with an Input State ("state", injecting runtime variables, text payloads, and optional multimodal image references).
0. Gentle Template Intro & Template Creatorβs Guide
Section titled β0. Gentle Template Intro & Template Creatorβs GuideβIf you are authoring your first .json.tmpl file, think of a dgem template as a digital Scantron sheet ("schema") paired with an input case folder ("state"):

Section titled βThe Three Building Blocks (boolean, choice, score)βBecause DiffusionGemma evaluates all questions on a bidirectional [MASK] canvas simultaneously, asking 5 questions takes about the same GPU forward-pass latency as asking 1 question:
"type": "boolean"(Yes/No Gate): Maps to two tokens (yes/no) and returns calibrated probability and normalized entropy ."type": "choice"(Mutually Exclusive Label,2..26Options): Maps each option to a single uppercase ASCII letter (AβZ). Adding a"description"field to each option teachesdgemmayour exact domain rubric zero-shot without fine-tuning."type": "score"(Ordered Scale Levels): Maps ordered levels (e.g.,["minimal", "moderate", "elevated", "severe"]) and computes the continuous probability-weighted expectation .
Naming questions (slot ids)
Section titled βNaming questions (slot ids)βQuestion ids are written into the prompt, so the model reads them. In our tests a single questionβs id made little
difference, but naming a second question β¦__mirror_rev measurably lowered accuracy even though its options were
identical. In multi-question schemas, use neutral ids that describe what is asked (team, urgent,
severity, decision_b). Avoid ids that hint the answer should differ or be inverted (mirror, reverse,
opposite, alt, check_again).
Prompt layout
Section titled βPrompt layoutβFrom serving v0.2.0 the model reads the "state" first and the questions after it (document_first). A template can
pin the older order with "layout": "schema_first" next to "questions", for example to keep a validated policyβs
prompt unchanged. See Prompt layout for the effect and how to compare both.
Yes/no questions over agent actions
Section titled βYes/no questions over agent actionsβFrom serving v0.3.0, a text request with 2β3 questions, at least 2 of them yes/no, reads each yes/no question alone
automatically. For larger templates that pair a fact question with an action judgment (for example βdid the user give
the date?β and βshould the assistant ask before booking?β), add "isolate": "noul" next to "questions". See
Prompt layout.
Temperature
Section titled βTemperatureβA template may carry "temperature" (a number, or one per question type such as {"noul": 3.0, "choice": 1.3}) fitted on
labelled examples of its own decisions. It rescales confidence and hesitation without changing the answers. See
calibrate your policy.

Section titled β6. Conditional Policy DAGs (depends_on & ask_if)βdgem templates can define multi-stage directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) where downstream questions only execute on the diffusion canvas if an upstream gate slot resolves to a trigger state (ask_if). When the gate condition is not met (e.g., active_breach == "no"), structured_server.py skips downstream containment and blast-radius questions and returns the Round 1 envelope immediately after a single forward pass.

Multimodal Spatial Grounding & DETR Object Queries
Section titled β7. Multimodal Spatial Grounding & DETR Object QueriesβWhile autoregressive Vision-Language Models (such as PaliGemma or Gemini) predict 2D bounding boxes by sequentially emitting 4 coordinate tokens left-to-right ( serial steps where an early ymin error conditions downstream xmax drift), dgem factors a 2D bounding box [ymin, xmin, ymax, xmax] into 4 parallel 21-bin (00..100, 5% step) choice slots plus a boolean presence gate (object_present) in a single forward pass (reads=1, think=0):
templates/multimodal/bbox_localization.json.tmpl: Single-object 5-slot spatial localization (object_present,ymin,xmin,ymax,xmax).templates/multimodal/bbox_multi_object_detr.json.tmpl: Dual-object parallelDETRquery canvas (obj1_*andobj2_*co-adapting via bidirectional attention).templates/multimodal/bbox_multi_object_set.json.tmpl: Multi-instance set localization (matched_count+obj1_*+obj2_*).
Key Design Principles
Section titled βKey Design Principlesβ- Argmax and Softmax Expectation Boxes:
structured_server.pyallows at most 26 options ([AβZ]) perchoiceslot, so each coordinate is 21 labels (00, 05, ..., 100).bench-bboxreports both the argmax box and the probability-weighted (expectation) box In our tests the two are close. The expectation does not help on boxes whose edges sit on a label, and its gain off-grid was not significant. Use whichever suits the consumer. Do not expect sub-bin precision. Keep coordinate labels in ascending order: reversedscorecoordinates collapse localization. - Flat
level 0Canvas (reads=1) vs.depends_on(reads=2): Instructured_server.py, addingdepends_on: ["object_present"]splits questions intolevel 0andlevel 1, requiring 2 sequential forward passes (reads=2). Keeping all 5 slots inlevel 0withoutdepends_onexecutes the entire bounding box + presence gate in 1 forward pass, while client-side gating zeros the box wheneverobject_present == false. - Per-Edge Entropy (): Each box edge has its own distribution. In our tests edge entropy ranked edges more than one step off above the rest, so it is a reasonable βcheck this edgeβ flag. It did not rise on occluded edges compared with their unoccluded twins. Do not use it as an occlusion detector.
- Validate Before Trusting Coordinates on New Inputs:
Boxes moved under flips and padding. Run
dgem bench-bbox --variants all --repeat 3on images like yours, and compare against the image-free baselines it reports.
# Single image localization with SigLIP vision readout./bin/dgem decide -u "${URL}/v1" --gcp-auth \ -t templates/multimodal/bbox_localization.json.tmpl \ -I fixtures/bbox/bbox-t1-03-offgrid-card.png \ -v 'target=checkout_summary_card' \ --stats

Section titled β8. Listwise Neural Reranking & RAG Security GateβWhile pointwise cross-encoder rerankers evaluate each candidate passage in isolation ( separate passes, blind to cross-document redundancy, multi-hop entity bridges, and set-level unanswerability), dgem evaluates up to candidate passages + 2 RAG security/abstention gates simultaneously in 1 forward pass (12 slots):
templates/rerank/listwise_decision_rerank.json.tmpl: 12-slot listwise decision canvas (doc_01doc_104-level orderedscoreslots +answer_presentbooleanslot +poisoned_passagechoiceslot).templates/rerank/pointwise_rerank.json.tmpl: 3-slot single-passage baseline (relevance_grade,relevance_tier,is_instruction_injection).
Continuous Softmax Relevance Expectation ()
Section titled βContinuous Softmax Relevance Expectation (r^i\hat{r}_ir^iβ)βInstead of sorting by discrete argmax grades (0..3, which often ties several of the 10 passages), compute the continuous expected relevance score from the restricted-softmax distribution :
The expectation breaks ties between passages that share an argmax grade, which helps ranking metrics such as nDCG@10 and MRR@10. Measure them on your own labelled queries.
